In this potentially tricky “middle” section Jackson doesn’t take the audience for granted or leave anything to chance, crafting a lavish, rip-roaring adventure that barely pauses for breath – let alone for Gandalf to puff on his pipe – from frantic beginning to cliff-hanging conclusion.Like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire it is confident enough to leave the audience hanging having created enormous momentum and promising an epic confrontation ahead, even if it is slightly frustrating not to have a proper ending.

As such the picture plays like the incident-packed “second act” to a much bigger film, reason for both its strengths (endless incident and excitement) and its few frustrations. These include the lack of resolution and a rather repetitive and simplistic narrative with one obstacle and challenge replaced by another as the Dwarves journey to the Lonely Mountain where they must overcome the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) in their quest to recapture their homeland, Erebor. There are few narrative twists or surprises while the characters themselves don’t undergo any meaningful or intriguing development: Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) has already found his courage, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) remains a proud, determined king-in-waiting, while Ian McKellen’s Gandalf is still Gandalf: oracular and all-knowing.Nevertheless, they are given more compelling and challenging things to do which test those qualities like never before. Bilbo has to face off against the colossal Smaug, fulfilling his purpose on the mission as the “burglar” who must purloin a special stone from Smaug’s teasure-laden lair which has the power to unite the Dwarf armies.

Thorin’s leadership comes under extreme pressure as they face implacable foes from the overtly hostile, like the barbarous Orcs, to the merely suspicious like the Elves who hold them all captive. They also face resistance from the ruler of Laketown near the Lonely Mountain, a pompous autocrat played amusingly by Stephen Fry who doesn’t want the Dwarves’ mission giving his subjugated townsfolk any ideas about liberation.“All this talk of change must be suppressed” he babbles to a sidekick, dismissing the dissatisfied as “shirkers, ingrates and rabble-rousers”. It’s a welcome bit of humour in a picture that is light on jollity and banter.
Gandalf, meanwhile, goes off on his own solo mission whose exact purpose I couldn’t quite fathom, although it conveniently gets him out of the way so the Dwarves must fend for themselves.

If existing characters don’t particularly surprise us new ones liven things up, including Fry’s self-serving twit and a melancholy bargemen Bard (Luke Evans) who reluctantly agrees to smuggle the hobbits into Laketown.I suspect the biggest cheer, however will be reserved for Orlando Bloom’ s Legolas, the heartthrob Elvish archer from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy who we meet here as a younger, more impetuous and naive prince.Far from making an appearance just for the sake of it (a danger given that the character doesn’t feature in the book) he has a substantial part and a starring role in one of the most exciting and protracted action sequences. This sees the Dwarves escape from captivity by the Elves in barrels and careen down rapids pursued by murderous Orcs. Logolas picks off the latter with his longbow bouncing balletically across the water on the bobbing heads of the Dwarves (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-style).It’s a terrific set-piece, all the more exciting and impressive for occurring in a naturalistic setting. As throughout the whole picture, the special effects are seamlessly integrated and quite wondrous.
